the mass media is to socialize people into accepting the legitimacy of 
their country's political system; ... lead them to acquiesce in America's 
prevailing social values; ... direct their opinions in ways which do 
not undermine and often support the domestic and foreign objectives of 
elites; ... and deter them from active, meaningful participation in 
politics -- rendering them quiescent before the powerful."
