How Much
By Al BrennerHow much teflon is inside you,
How much mercury, how much lead?
You're a walking chemical factory,
Worth less alive than dead.
How much cadmium and arsenic
Is surging through your veins?
How many pesticides and dioxins
Are residing in your brains?
Go and beg the EPA or the corporation Boss;
You know what their response will be:
"How much does it cost?"
How many phenylenes and furines, lubricants, and insulators,
How many fumes spewed out by the carburetors, generators,
refrigerators, radiators, oscillators, excavators,
exterminators, fabricators, incinerators...?
In the air-conditioned limousine,
Protected from exhaust,
The lobbyist tells the Congressman
How much it will cost.
While at the White House banquet
Where the napkins are embossed
The Fatcat tells the President
How much it will cost.
As I consider the end of human life
It strikes me as terrible-funny
That the ultimate cause of the Apocalypse
May be merely a matter of money.
When the land is dry and sterile,
When all of life is lost,
Who will ask that ultimate question:
"How much did it cost?"
